One or more suction and discharge valves are located on the valve plate or between two symmetrical plates. These valves open and close due to the pressure difference created by the reciprocating motion of the piston.
As the piston moves down, the working volume in the cylinder increases and the pressure inside the cylinder falls below the pressure in the intake manifold. This pressure difference causes the suction valve to open and air is sucked into the cylinder from the intake manifold.
The exhaust valve remains closed due to the lower pressure in the cylinder compared to the exhaust manifold.
As the piston moves upward, the working volume in the cylinder decreases, the pressure inside the cylinder increases, closing the intake valve, and when it exceeds the pressure in the exhaust manifold, the discharge valve opens and compressed air is supplied.
